5 Ways To Master The Art of Layering

Take a page from the LoveShackbook and keep your twirl-worthy frocks in rotation styled with a couple of go-to layers throughout the season.

Soooo, you may have noticed but we’re kinda into dresses and skirts, too… like all year around. That’s right, no matter the weather, we’re reaching for our maxis, midis and minis away – even when it’s snowing. Take a page from the LoveShackbook and keep your twirl-worthy frocks in rotation styled with a couple of go-to layered outfits throughout the season.

There are essentially three different layers that will make your outfit. Start with a fitted top or shirt as the base layer—layering graduates items like tights, onesies, and long-sleeve shirts from mere wardrobe basics into the secret weapons in our closets. Then comes the functional mid layer that will keep you warm, like a cashmere sweater vest or faux leather jacket. Lastly, the accent outer layer can be a heavier garment, like an overcoat.

While layering is nothing new – pair boots with lace layers, silk ruffles and flared leather jackets, mini dresses with chunky, shearling jackets and boots plus strapless or slip dresses worn over fitted turtlenecks – here are five ways to layer a dress and bring versatility to your wardrobe this fall.

Miniskirts + Chunky Knits + Furry Jacket

Here at LoveShackFancy, we're obviously not giving up our minis simply because the temps have dropped. Not a chance. Therefore, our fall uniform includes, dare I say, even revolves around an ultra-mini skirt or mini dress at times. The trick here is to wear said mini with a super soft cardigan or a simple, chunky knit paired with knee-high boots (add tights if need be) and a cropped faux fur shearling jacket.

Lully Jacket

While this may be the most apparent styling tip, layering a camisole or nice base layer under a thick sweater is worth mentioning not just for the feel of it but also for practicality: to keep from overheating in the office or at a restaurant. Hello, optionality! This way, if it's super hot inside (which it can tend to be in the winter), then take the sweater off and wrap it around your shoulders (and/or coat if the weather allows!). It's a vibe.

Strapless Dress + Slim Fitting Turtleneck

Now this one sounds almost counter intuitive when it comes to designer dresses or skirts, but it's worth mentioning that the most versatile item in your fall arsenal is a perfect-for-layering turtleneck. Yup, they are no longer the stuffy shirts of yore and, instead, are exactly what you need to achieve the head-to-toe layered look. Think slightly transparent, a little reveal and conceal, peaking through underneath a sleeveless or strapless dress, an oversized blazer, or a maxi or mini skirt. It works overtime by adding an element of instant chic plus an extra layer of warmth.

Tonal Layers

We love dressing in all one color, and fall is the time to truly drive this theme home with endless layers. In case you haven't noticed, there are two shades we tend to skew most heavily toward. We love to wear white all year long. In our mind, there's no need to wait until summer or winter to bring out the crisp white layers. Nope, white is year-round. So, pile on this non-color color from head to toe for an instantly polished look.

Our second shade, or first, depending on the day, is pink. Pink on pink on pink is a super sophisticated way to wear one color from top to bottom. Pair multiple shades within the pink family with a variety of different textures to take an ultra-chic approach to layering this rosy hue. Something about layering ink takes it to the next level, from flirty to feminine.

Maxi Dresses + Longline Coats + Barely-There Pumps

Look, it’s as we’ve said, just because it’s getting colder outside, doesn’t mean we’re giving up on our favorite dresses. Instead we’re keeping them in rotation with a chic, ankle-length coat—a look that promises romance Opt for oversize (trust me—the bigger, the better!) be it a shearling situation, vintage fur find or pink or black military inspired. You can even expose an ankle if you’re feeling up to it ! Which is good news for those of the moment shoe silhouettes that aren’t boots, like ballerinas, penny loafers, and sweet strappy pumps.

Slip dresses + Shearling + Socks

We love slip dresses, yes we do. And almost more so in fall and winter. The slip dress is a great layer to pile chunky shearling jackets a top giving an otherwise simple silhouette some edge. Finish the look with a chic heel, ballet flat or loafer styled with a ribbed or cashmere sock that elevates the look while adding a bit of flair.
